Getting to Nara Is Easier Than You Think

Nara sits at a convenient crossroads in the Kansai region of Japan. Despite being one of the country's most visited heritage destinations, it's remarkably accessible — often a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto, and easily reachable from Tokyo via Shinkansen. Here's everything you need to know to plan your journey.

From Osaka

Osaka is the most common gateway to Nara, with frequent and affordable rail connections.

RouteJourney TimeApprox. FareNotes
Kintetsu Namba → Kintetsu Nara (Kintetsu Line)~40 min (Express)~¥680Most convenient; drops you centrally
JR Osaka → JR Nara (Yamatoji Line)~50 min~¥820Covered by JR Pass

The Kintetsu Limited Express from Osaka Namba is widely considered the easiest and most comfortable option. Trains run frequently throughout the day. Kintetsu Nara Station is closer to the main sights than JR Nara Station, saving you a slightly longer walk.

From Kyoto

Nara is only about 45 minutes from Kyoto, making a combined itinerary very practical.

RouteJourney TimeApprox. FareNotes
Kintetsu Kyoto → Kintetsu Nara (Kintetsu Kyoto Line)~35–45 min~¥760Express available; direct service
JR Kyoto → JR Nara (Miyakoji Rapid)~45 min~¥720Covered by JR Pass

Both options are excellent. If you hold a JR Pass, use the JR route at no extra cost. The Kintetsu option places you closer to Nara Park upon arrival.

From Tokyo

Nara is a longer journey from Tokyo but very manageable as part of a Kansai trip itinerary.

  • Shinkansen + Train: Take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka (approx. 2.5 hours), then connect to Nara via the routes above. Total journey: around 3–3.5 hours.
  • JR Pass holders can cover the Shinkansen and JR Nara leg entirely on the pass.
  • Highway bus: Overnight buses from Tokyo to Nara operate and are significantly cheaper, though journey times are 8–9 hours.

Getting Around Nara

Once in Nara, the main sightseeing area is compact and walkable. However, for covering more ground:

  • Walking — The central area around Nara Park, Tōdai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and Naramachi is best explored on foot. Budget 30–40 minutes to walk from either station to the park.
  • City Loop Bus — Nara has a tourist loop bus (¥100–¥250 per ride) that connects major sites. Day passes are available.
  • Bicycle rental — Several shops near both stations rent bicycles by the hour or day. Ideal for visiting sites slightly further afield such as Yakushi-ji and Tōshōdai-ji.
  • Taxi — Available outside both stations; useful for Yoshino or remote temple visits.

Practical Tips

  • The Kintetsu Rail Pass (separate from JR Pass) covers unlimited Kintetsu travel and can be excellent value if you're exploring across Nara Prefecture.
  • Both Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara stations have luggage storage, allowing you to sightsee without your bags.
  • Nara is a popular day trip, so arriving early (by 9 AM) significantly improves your experience — crowds build from mid-morning onward.
  • If staying overnight, you'll have the park to yourself in the early morning and evening — a genuinely magical experience.
